Volokitin wins the Donostia Chess Festival
Eleventh seed Andrei Volokitin won a strong event in Donostia (the Basque name for San Sebastian, in the Spanish Basque country) and took home the 20,000 Euros first prize. The event from the 28th of December to the 5th of January celebrated the centenary of the famous San Sebastian tournaments of 2011 and 2012 won by Capablanca and Rubinstein.
 
Wang Yue dominates Hastings
The traditional Hastings tournament was won by the Chinese star Wang Yue. He finished ahead of the field after never being in danger throughout the nine rounds of the tournament. The Indian contingent impressed and took four of the top seven places, with Babu Lalith and Sundar Shyam both obtaining GM norms.   
 
Anish Giri top in Reggio Emilia
The 17 year-old Dutch star won the prestigious category 20 Reggio Emilia tournament after his closest rivals both lost in the last round. The table demonstrates how close it was with three players finishing just behind the leader. Hikaru Nakamura was leading by some way at one point, but a disastrous run-in, including his last round loss, cost him dear.  
 
Vachier-Lagrave wins Port-Marly
The sports complex 'Les Pyramides' in Port-Marly (eastern suburbs of Paris) was the venue for the first leg of the new French Federation Rapidplay Grand Prix. Ten 2600 plus players were present including many of the leading French players, including their highest-rated player Etienne Bacrot. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (French No.2) beat the young Brazilian GM Alexander Fier in the final.
 
Jobava is European Rapidplay Champion
The Georgian GM Baadur Jobava finished ahead of a group of seven to win the 2011 Championship in Warsaw, Poland. In second place was the young Russian Sanan Sjugirov, and in third the local player Robert Kempinski.
 
Melkumyan wins European Blitz in Warsaw
The European Blitz and Rapid Championships are taking place in Warsaw, Poland. The new European Blitz Champion is Hrant Melkumyan, which is something of a surprise result, as the Armenian was only the 28th seed. Aleksey Dreev took silver and Radoslaw Wojtaszek bronze.
 
 
Jan Timman is 60!
The Dutch GM, and former World No.2, has turned 60-years-old today. Once known as an openings pioneer, he has in recent years been closely involved in endgame studies and analysis, which explains why New in Chess have organized a endgame study tournament to commemorate his 60th birthday.
 
 
Gros Xake Taldea wins the Spanish Team Championship 2011
The Spanish Team Championship 2011 took place in the Spanish enclave of Melilla (situated on the North African coast) from the 21st to the 26th of November. It's the first time that Gros (a suburb of San Sebastian) have become Spanish Champions. In the photo, (in blue from left to right) there are Pablo San Segundo, Ruslan Ponomariov, Alexei Shirov, Etienne Bacrot, Luc Van Wely, and kneeling, IM Santiago Gonzalez de la Torre.  
 
World Youth Championships
This year the World Youth Championships took place from the 18th to the 26th of November in Caldas Novas, Brazil, perhaps the biggest hydro-thermal resort in the World. The Armenian Samvel Ter-Sahakyan won the Under-18s open by a whole point, while Meri Arabidze from Georgia became the World Girls (u-18) Champion. Russia with three golds was the most successful country.
 
Vladimir Okhotnik wins World Seniors
The 21st World Senior Championships took place in Rijeka, Croatia from the 15th to the 26th of November. A last round victory with Black enabled Vladimir Okhotnik (now of France, formerly of the Ukraine) to beat Bojan Kurajica, and finish the tournament with 9/11. Kasparov by a short head
A Blitz match between Garry Kasparov and Nigel Short ended in a close-run 4.5-3.5 win for the favourite after Kasparov won the last game with the black pieces. The match in Leuven, Belgium celebrated the fifth anniversary of the 'Your Next Move' site.  
 
Sadler sizzles in Oslo
Englishman Matthew Sadler has been in hot form since his 'coming back' from an extended sabbatical of several years. Following on from a fine performance in the Sants open in Barcelona, here in the Oslo International he finished a full 1.5 points ahead of the second-placed player Spike Ernst.  
 
 
Kasparov in action!
Garry Kasparov may be retired, and officially inactive, but he occasionally indulges in an exhibition match or two. Last week-end he beat Maxime Vachier-Lagrave 1.5-0.5 in a rapid match in Clichy, in the suburbs of Paris. An indication that despite his 'retirement' he hasn't lost his touch!
 
Moscow too strong for Saint Petersburg
Gazprom sponsorship enabled the 22nd match between Russia's two main cities to go ahead this year in Saint Petersburg. Moscow, on paper the stronger side on all ten boards, won with a late surge but the home team tied the first set of games and pushed the capital close in the second and final round.  
 
 
 
 
Vachier-Lagrave is French Champion
After a closely fought contest, top seed Maxime Vachier-Lagrave edged out a group of four players who were only half-a-point behind. In the last round Vachier-Lagrave drew with Black against Etienne Bacrot, whereas pre-round co-leader Laurent Fressinet went down to Christian Bauer. Despite complaints that there were too many short draws, the Championship in Caen (in Normandy, Northern France) was still one of the most exciting for years.   
 
Sergei Zhigalko takes Baku
The Baku open is one of the strongest in the international calendar, with five 2700 players participating this year. Seventh seed Sergei Zhigalko of Belarus topped the field on 7/9, with Dimitry Andreikin and Emil Sutovsky half-a-point behind.
 
Dariusz Swiercz is World Junior Champion
The World Junior Championships in Chennai (Viswanathan Anand's birthplace, formerly known as Madras), India, was full of surprises with the Polish prodigy Dariusz Swiercz finishing ahead of the Armenian hopeful Robert Hovhannisyan on Tie-break. Local player Sahaj Grover completed the podium. Deysi Cori of Peru is World Girl's Champion.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Indian Summer in Paris
The annual Paris Championships took place from the 2nd to the 10th of July. The top section was won by Arun Prasad who finished ahead of several higher-rated players. Sergey Fedorchuk and Ruben Felgaer were half-a-point behind on 6.5/9.  
 
Greek Team Championship
The 2011 Greek Team Championship took place in Eretria from the 3rd to the 8th of July. Several top players took part in the seven round event which mixed elite, female and junior players from 34 teams. The favourites Peristeri (with Ivanchuk on board 1) finished in first place.  
 
Anish Giri is Dutch champion
The Dutch Championship has finished with Anish Giri, who turned 17 during the event, finishing two clear points ahead of Ivan Sokolov in second place. The ten player round robin took place from the 25th of June to the 5th of July in Boxtel.  
 
The Commonwealth and South African open
In one of the most important events taking place in Africa this year, Gawain Jones edged Nigel Short on tie-break, both players scoring 9.5/11. This prestigious event took place in Ekurhuleni in the Gauteng region (Johannesburg and Pretoria).  
 
Caruana on top in Delhi
The AAII event in Delhi featured five youthful players and Indian No.2 Sasikiran, who must have felt like a veteran (at 30 years old) in this company! Italian Fabiano Caruana led throughout and, despite a ninth round loss to Laznicka, always looked deemed to win the event. Hou Yifan finished bottom as her poor run of form continues.  
 
Morozevich wins the Russian Higher League
The Russian Higher League took place from the 15th to the 26th of June in Taganrog, which can be found on the sea of Azov near Rostov-on-Don. Apart from being one of the most westerly points in Russia, the city of Taganrog is famous for being the birthplace of Anton Chekhov. Alexander Morozevich, a former World Top Ten player, finished ahead of a strong field.   
 
Ponomariov is Ukrainian Champion
Ruslan Ponomariov finished at the top of a tough field in Kiev. This result was in doubt until he won with Black against Alexander Moiseenko in the last round.
