Levon Aronian is the 2012 Tata Steel champion
A short draw was sufficient for Levon Aronian to ensure the 2012 title. Fabiano Caruana won again today, as did Gata Kamsky. In the lower groups, both Pentala Harikrishna and Maxim Turov started strongly and mantained their good form until the end to win their respective groups.

The Chinese women were in great form in 2011, and now have three women in the World's top seven. Hou Yifan is up to second place, with Ju Wenjun sixth and Zhao Xue seventh. Anna Muzychuk had an incredible tournament in Porto Carras and is now fourth, hot on the heels of Humpy Koneru.

Volokitin wins the Donostia Chess Festival
Eleventh seed Andrei Volokitin won a strong event in Donostia (the Basque name for San Sebastian, in the Spanish Basque country) and took home the 20,000 Euros first prize. The event from the 28th of December to the 5th of January celebrated the centenary of the famous San Sebastian tournaments of 2011 and 2012 won by Capablanca and Rubinstein.

Wang Yue dominates Hastings
The traditional Hastings tournament was won by the Chinese star Wang Yue. He finished ahead of the field after never being in danger throughout the nine rounds of the tournament. The Indian contingent impressed and took four of the top seven places, with Babu Lalith and Sundar Shyam both obtaining GM norms.

Anish Giri top in Reggio Emilia
The 17 year-old Dutch star won the prestigious category 20 Reggio Emilia tournament after his closest rivals both lost in the last round. The table demonstrates how close it was with three players finishing just behind the leader. Hikaru Nakamura was leading by some way at one point, but a disastrous run-in, including his last round loss, cost him dear.

Vachier-Lagrave wins Port-Marly
The sports complex 'Les Pyramides' in Port-Marly (eastern suburbs of Paris) was the venue for the first leg of the new French Federation Rapidplay Grand Prix. Ten 2600 plus players were present including many of the leading French players, including their highest-rated player Etienne Bacrot. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (French No.2) beat the young Brazilian GM Alexander Fier in the final.

Jobava is European Rapidplay Champion
The Georgian GM Baadur Jobava finished ahead of a group of seven to win the 2011 Championship in Warsaw, Poland. In second place was the young Russian Sanan Sjugirov, and in third the local player Robert Kempinski.

Melkumyan wins European Blitz in Warsaw
The European Blitz and Rapid Championships are taking place in Warsaw, Poland. The new European Blitz Champion is Hrant Melkumyan, which is something of a surprise result, as the Armenian was only the 28th seed. Aleksey Dreev took silver and Radoslaw Wojtaszek bronze.

Blindfold in Beijing!
The three-day Blindfold rapid has finished with a three-way tie on 5/7 for first place in the mixed event. The Hungarian GM Zoltan Almasi had more victories under his belt and was thus declared the winner ahead of Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Vugar Gashimov. In the parellel Women's event, Hou Yifan added the Blindfold crown to the Blitz title she won earlier this week.

Jan Timman is 60!
The Dutch GM, and former World No.2, has turned 60-years-old today. Once known as an openings pioneer, he has in recent years been closely involved in endgame studies and analysis, which explains why New in Chess have organized a endgame study tournament to commemorate his 60th birthday.

Kramnik wins the third London Classic
A draw was enough to ensure first place for Vladimir Kramnik. The only winner in the final round was Hikaru Nakamura who beat the out-of-sorts Michael Adams in the most complicated struggle of the day. The American thus moves up to second place ahead of Magnus Carlsen. The leading English player, and the only one to gain rating points, was Luke McShane in fourth.

Gros Xake Taldea wins the Spanish Team Championship 2011
The Spanish Team Championship 2011 took place in the Spanish enclave of Melilla (situated on the North African coast) from the 21st to the 26th of November. It's the first time that Gros (a suburb of San Sebastian) have become Spanish Champions. In the photo, (in blue from left to right) there are Pablo San Segundo, Ruslan Ponomariov, Alexei Shirov, Etienne Bacrot, Luc Van Wely, and kneeling, IM Santiago Gonzalez de la Torre.

World Youth Championships
This year the World Youth Championships took place from the 18th to the 26th of November in Caldas Novas, Brazil, perhaps the biggest hydro-thermal resort in the World. The Armenian Samvel Ter-Sahakyan won the Under-18s open by a whole point, while Meri Arabidze from Georgia became the World Girls (u-18) Champion. Russia with three golds was the most successful country.

Vladimir Okhotnik wins World Seniors
The 21st World Senior Championships took place in Rijeka, Croatia from the 15th to the 26th of November. A last round victory with Black enabled Vladimir Okhotnik (now of France, formerly of the Ukraine) to beat Bojan Kurajica, and finish the tournament with 9/11. The Russian Galina Strutinskaya is the new Women's Senior Champion.

It's Carlsen and Aronian
Magnus Carlsen has a habit of finishing strongly in major tournaments. Here a last round win against Hikaru Nakamura enabled him to catch the previous leader Levon Aronian, who drew his game. Aronian had to defend carefully in a long game in order to avoid defeat, and now provisionally becomes the World No.2 for the first time. The other winner was Peter Svidler who beat an out-of-sorts Vladimir Kramnik.

Hou Yifan retains World Championship
A solid draw today was sufficient. Hou Yifan wins the Women's World Championship match against Humpy Koneru by the convincing margin of 5.5-2.5. The Chinese World Champion was never in any danger throughout the match and thoroughly deserved her victory.

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov made a 2866 performance in Porto Carras, helping his team on the way to a silver medal. Gold medal winner on board one was Michael Adams of England. Anna Muzychuk's 8.5/9 left her well ahead of her rivals in the women's ranking list with Kateryna Lahno in second place.

Anand is Corsican Masters Champion
Viswanathan Anand beat last year's winner Shakhriyar Mamedyarov by the convincing score of 2-0 in the final of the 2011 Corsican masters. The earlier rounds were played at the Theatre in Bastia, but the Final took place in the 'Palais de Congrès' in Ajaccio, Corsica's second city.

A win in the final round over close rival Leinier Dominguez Perez sealed the Vietnamese No.1's victory in the strongest ever US invitational round robin, held in Lubbock, Texas. Georg Meier was equal second, along with the Cuban Dominguez, who was actually leading before his stumble at the final hurdle.

Kramnik gets back to 2800!
Two draws in the final round of the Unive Crown group have left matters as they were. So former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik finished first ahead of Anish Giri. A score of 4½/6 was sufficient for Kramnik to gain enough points to get his virtual rating back over the 2800 mark.

Zhao Xue and Ju Wenjun make it a China 1,2
Ju Wenjun ensured that she finished in second place after beating her compatriot Zhao Xue in the last round of the Nalchik Women's Grand Prix. This loss hardly took the shine off Zhao Xue's tournament result, as 9½/11 was still an exceptional performance and she will naturally take with her maximum Grand Prix points. Viktorija Cmilyte and Ekaterina Kovalevskaya were equal third.

Morozevich: Victor in Saratov
A final round victory in Saratov has left Alexander Morozevich a full 1½ points ahead at the end of the Governer's Cup in Saratov. Behind him, fellow Russian Evgeny Tomashevsky was second after a final round draw. Curiously enough, Alexei Shirov finished in fourth place having made eleven straight draws! Nikita Vitiugov was too ill to play his last two games, gifting points to Peter Leko and Ni Hua.

Carlsen ahead of Ivanchuk
The leaders drew and so Magnus Carlsen and Vassily Ivanchuk finished equal first after the final round. Carlsen then won the Blitz tie-break 1½-½ to take the first place. The only decisive result in the tenth round was Viswanathan Anand's complicated win over Francisco Vallejo Pons, thus taking the World Champion above the Spaniard and into a third way tie with Hikaru Nakamura and Levon Aronian.

Kasparov by a short head
A Blitz match between Garry Kasparov and Nigel Short ended in a close-run 4.5-3.5 win for the favourite after Kasparov won the last game with the black pieces. The match in Leuven, Belgium celebrated the fifth anniversary of the 'Your Next Move' site.

Sadler sizzles in Oslo
Englishman Matthew Sadler has been in hot form since his 'coming back' from an extended sabbatical of several years. Following on from a fine performance in the Sants open in Barcelona, here in the Oslo International he finished a full 1.5 points ahead of the second-placed player Spike Ernst.

The European Club Championship has finished with some impressive individual performances. Teimour Radjabov's 3000+ on board one, for second-placed Socar was exceptional, but it wasn't the highest! Denis Khismatullin managed an even better result on bottom board for Tomsk. Antoaneta Stefanova, playing board one for champions AVS, had the best result in the Women's Club Championship.

Kasparov in action!
Garry Kasparov may be retired, and officially inactive, but he occasionally indulges in an exhibition match or two. Last week-end he beat Maxime Vachier-Lagrave 1.5-0.5 in a rapid match in Clichy, in the suburbs of Paris. An indication that despite his 'retirement' he hasn't lost his touch!

Moscow too strong for Saint Petersburg
Gazprom sponsorship enabled the 22nd match between Russia's two main cities to go ahead this year in Saint Petersburg. Moscow, on paper the stronger side on all ten boards, won with a late surge but the home team tied the first set of games and pushed the capital close in the second and final round.

Viswanathan Anand proved to be too strong for the others, finishing on 4½/6 in the 2-day Botvinnik Memorial rapid in Moscow. On the other hand, the World No.1 Magnus Carlsen lost all three games on the second day and props up the bottom of the final table. Viktorija Cmilyte won the Women's event with a combative 4/6.

Vachier-Lagrave is French Champion
After a closely fought contest, top seed Maxime Vachier-Lagrave edged out a group of four players who were only half-a-point behind. In the last round Vachier-Lagrave drew with Black against Etienne Bacrot, whereas pre-round co-leader Laurent Fressinet went down to Christian Bauer. Despite complaints that there were too many short draws, the Championship in Caen (in Normandy, Northern France) was still one of the most exciting for years.

The Baku open is one of the strongest in the international calendar, with five 2700 players participating this year. Seventh seed Sergei Zhigalko of Belarus topped the field on 7/9, with Dimitry Andreikin and Emil Sutovsky half-a-point behind.

The World Junior Championships in Chennai (Viswanathan Anand's birthplace, formerly known as Madras), India, was full of surprises with the Polish prodigy Dariusz Swiercz finishing ahead of the Armenian hopeful Robert Hovhannisyan on Tie-break. Local player Sahaj Grover completed the podium. Deysi Cori of Peru is World Girl's Champion.

Peter Svidler won the title yesterday after obtaining an unassailable lead in the Russian Championships in Moscow. Today however he was comprehensively beaten by Alexander Morozevich, who thus gained second place alone. Morozevich has been in great form this summer, but must be regretting having overpressed against Ian Nepomniachtchi a couple of rounds ago.

Hikaru Nakamura finished with a win over Vladimir Kramnik. After having a rough time in Dortmund, two late wins have certainly improved the American's overall performance. The other games were drawn and the standings remain unchanged, with Kramnik still a comfortable victor overall.

Armenia Champions
In the last round, draws across the board against the Ukraine was sufficient for the Armenian team to get their hands on the gold medal in Ningbo China. They were the only team to have remained unbeaten. China won the big clash with Hungary 2½-1½ and thus obtained silver. The Ukrainians manged bronze, due in part to the Russian's surprising defeat at the hands of the Indians.

Ju Wenjun drew with White and was able to claim the title by a whole point. Harika Dronavalli was an unbeaten second, and both of these players obtained GM norms. The World champion Hou Yifan won, thus inflicting a first defeat on Nadezhda Kosintseva who finished equal third with Zhao Xue.

The annual Paris Championships took place from the 2nd to the 10th of July. The top section was won by Arun Prasad who finished ahead of several higher-rated players. Sergey Fedorchuk and Ruben Felgaer were half-a-point behind on 6.5/9.

Greek Team Championship
The 2011 Greek Team Championship took place in Eretria from the 3rd to the 8th of July. Several top players took part in the seven round event which mixed elite, female and junior players from 34 teams. The favourites Peristeri (with Ivanchuk on board 1) finished in first place.

The Dutch Championship has finished with Anish Giri, who turned 17 during the event, finishing two clear points ahead of Ivan Sokolov in second place. The ten player round robin took place from the 25th of June to the 5th of July in Boxtel.

In one of the most important events taking place in Africa this year, Gawain Jones edged Nigel Short on tie-break, both players scoring 9.5/11. This prestigious event took place in Ekurhuleni in the Gauteng region (Johannesburg and Pretoria).

Caruana on top in Delhi
The AAII event in Delhi featured five youthful players and Indian No.2 Sasikiran, who must have felt like a veteran (at 30 years old) in this company! Italian Fabiano Caruana led throughout and, despite a ninth round loss to Laznicka, always looked deemed to win the event. Hou Yifan finished bottom as her poor run of form continues.

Morozevich wins the Russian Higher League
The Russian Higher League took place from the 15th to the 26th of June in Taganrog, which can be found on the sea of Azov near Rostov-on-Don. Apart from being one of the most westerly points in Russia, the city of Taganrog is famous for being the birthplace of Anton Chekhov. Alexander Morozevich, a former World Top Ten player, finished ahead of a strong field.

Carlsen champion on tie-break
A draw in the last round left Sergey Karjakin and Magnus Carlsen in equal first. The Norwegian retained the title on tie-break. Vassily Ivanchuk managed to squeeze a win out of the Exchange Slav against Hikaru Nakamura in a controlled positional game.
