After a closely fought contest, top seed Maxime Vachier-Lagrave edged out a group of four players who were only half-a-point behind. In the last round Vachier-Lagrave drew with Black against Etienne Bacrot, whereas pre-round co-leader Laurent Fressinet went down to Christian Bauer.
Despite complaints that there were too many short draws, the Championship in Caen (in Normandy, Northern France) was still one of the most exciting for years.

In the women's event, Sophie Milliet who, in the absence of Marie Sebag and Almira Skripchenko, was the clear favourite. She duly won with a round to spare.
