Ponomariov wins again

Hikaru Nakamura and Ruslan Ponomariov played a match a few months back, and no doubt know each other's game very well. Today it was the Ukrainian who was most inspired as he outplayed the American in a Nimzoindian. White's bishops never got going. Anish Giri won his first game against Georg Meier and the leader, Vladimir Kramnik, drew.

Kramnik tried hard to make it three in a row, as he sacrificed to open Black's king, but it was only good enough for a perpetual check.

Georg Meier seemed to have enough activity early on, but Giri gradually unraveled and his bishop proved to be a most useful piece. The German released the pressure with a pawn offer, and may have been OK, but the decisive moment came when Meier let down his guard and allowed Giri to combine to win a piece deep into the endgame.
