Kamsky and Gelfand qualify

The end of Topalov's challenge

After the four classical games, Gata Kamsky has eliminated Veselin Topalov, and Boris Gelfand will go forward to the next round at the cost of Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. The remaining two matchs will go to tie-breaks tomorrow, involving rapid games and even Blitz chess if necessary.

Alexander Grischuk didn't really try to profit from having the white pieces, as he offered a draw quite early on, in a quiet Queen's Gambit Declined.

The match will be decided tomorrow on the special tie-break day.

Another Queen's Gambit, but this time with Kramnik as White.

Radjabov played an early ...c5 and accepted an isolated pawn for free piece play. Complex play led to general liquidation and equality.

This match will also be decided tomorrow.

Veselin Topalov managed to keep a pull with his bishop pair. Nevertheless, Kamsky was more or less holding until he blundered just before the time control and let Topalov in.

Matters were then complicated, but heavily favourable for Topalov. He had opportunities to win and even-up the match, but he he let things slip and Kamsky was able to generate enough counterplay.

Mamedyarov tried to get off the beaten track in an unusual Benoni. He even sacrificed a pawn, but then had second thoughts and offered a draw. A clear sign that he didn't believe that he had enough compensation.

So Mamedyarov will join Topalov on the way home.
